Fats float. Proteins cling. Standard treatment systems weren’t built for what comes out of a food processing unit — here’s the system that was, and how we build it differently.
Envioron Ecosol I Expert Series I 7 min read I Food & Beverage I Wastewater Treatment
If you’ve ever walked through a dairy, a brewery, or a meat processing unit and looked at the wastewater coming out the back, you already know the problem — it’s greasy, it’s milky, it smells, and it absolutely does not want to settle down quietly in a tank the way textbook wastewater is supposed to.
This is the exact problem we’ve spent years solving at Envioron Ecosol, and it’s why Dissolved Air Flotation, or DAF, has become one of the most requested systems we install for food and beverage clients across Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and the wider North India belt.
“Push fat-heavy effluent straight into a biological treatment system and you’re asking for trouble — fat coats the biomass, oxygen transfer drops, and the whole plant starts underperforming. DAF is the pretreatment step that takes the punishment so your STP doesn’t have to.”
The Challenge
What makes food & beverage wastewater so difficult
Every plant has its own quirks — a dairy’s effluent looks nothing like a brewery’s — but a few problems show up almost everywhere.

High fat, oil and grease that floats instead of settling, defeating conventional gravity-based tanks.

Fine suspended solids — proteins, starches, pulp — that clog filters and overload screens fast.

Effluent strength that swings hard depending on the shift and what’s being produced that day.

Strict discharge limits for FOG and BOD before water can reach a CETP, sewer, or be reused.

Very little spare floor space for yet another bulky treatment unit on an already packed plant floor.

Fat-shocked biological systems lose oxygen transfer efficiency and underperform fast.
THE PROCESS
How a DAF plant works — step by step
In plain terms: tiny air bubbles physically lift fats, oils, and fine solids to the surface instead of relying on gravity to drag them down.
| 1. Screening & Equalization | Raw effluent passes through a screen to catch coarse solids, then into an equalization tank that smooths out flow and load swings from batch production. |
| 2. Chemical Conditioning | Coagulants and flocculants are dosed in to neutralize charge on fat and protein particles, clumping them into larger, removable flocs. |
| 3. Air Saturation | Treated water is recycled and saturated with compressed air inside a saturator vessel at 4–6 kg/cm² pressure. |
| 4. Pressure Release & Flotation | Air-saturated water releases millions of microscopic bubbles through a pressure-reduction valve, carrying flocculated fat and solids to the surface. |
| 5. Skimming | A mechanical surface skimmer sweeps the floated scum into a collection trough while clear water is drawn off below. |
| 6. Clarified Outlet | Water with most of its FOG, TSS and BOD removed moves forward to biological treatment, polishing, or safe reuse. |

Why It Pays Off
This isn’t just a compliance box to tick.
A lot of plant owners think of DAF purely as a regulatory requirement. It’s not — it’s a cost-saving device disguised as a treatment unit.
- Protects your biological treatment system from fat shock loads that knock it offline
- Cuts sludge handling and disposal costs by removing FOG at the earliest stage
- Compact footprint — fits even in space-constrained food processing units
- Lower long-term operating cost since your biological stage isn’t working overtime
- Makes water reuse for CIP, cooling, or gardening realistically achievable
- Consistent CPCB/SPCB compliance — not scrambling before every inspection
Our Approach
Where Envioron Ecosol does things differently
Plenty of vendors can sell you a DAF tank. What we’ve built our name on is what happens before that sale — and long after it.
We design around your effluent, not a catalogue size
No two food plants produce identical wastewater. We study your actual FOG load, BOD/COD numbers, and flow pattern before finalizing tank sizing, retention time, and dosing — not a standard size pulled from a brochure.
Extra structural bracing — built in as standard
Our DAF tanks carry additional bracing beyond typical fabrication norms, built to handle the constant vibration and hydraulic loading of continuous food-processing environments. It matters even more on hill-terrain installations in Himachal Pradesh, where transport and site conditions already add mechanical stress before commissioning even begins.
One team, start to finish
Design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning — all handled in-house. No coordination gaps, no finger-pointing between contractors when something needs adjusting.
After-sales support that actually shows up
Our service team is based right here in the region — Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Chandigarh tricity. That means faster site visits, quicker spares access, periodic preventive maintenance, and direct access to the engineers who designed your system — not a call centre reading from a script.
Straight talk on running costs
We give clients real power, chemical, and sludge disposal costs upfront — so plant owners can budget accurately for the plant’s lifetime, not find out the hard way six months in.
Who We Serve
